Enfermedad Renal y los Hispanos (Kidney Disease Strikes Hispanic Americans). Rockville, MD: American Kidney Fund. 2006. 4 p.
This Spanish language brochure helps Hispanic/Latino readers understand their risks for kidney disease and how to reduce that risk. Part of a new program from the American Kidney Fund (AKF) called MIKE (Minority Intervention and Kidney Education), the brochure explains the increased incidence of both diabetes and hypertension (high blood pressure) in Hispanics/Latinos and how these conditions add to the risk for kidney disease. The brochure outlines the symptoms of these conditions, diagnostic tests used to confirm diabetes or hypertension, the problem of early chronic kidney disease (CKD), and how to prevent kidney disease. Preventive strategies outlined include eating a healthy, low-fat diet; reducing the amount of over-the-counter pain medications used; seeing a health care provider regularly; taking any prescribed blood pressure medications; managing diabetes; becoming aware of family medical history; and considering a low-protein diet to slow the progression of any diagnosed CKD. A final section describes the goals and activities of the MIKE program; readers are referred to www.MikeHelps.org for more information. The brochure is illustrated with black-and-white photographs of people undertaking a variety of activities. 2 figures.
